Our multidisciplinary team supports parents and provides care for these little patients in three departments, depending on their needs :
From before birth, close collaboration with obstetricians enables us to prepare for a high-risk birth. A specialised multidisciplinary team then cares for newborns in the neonatology department: neonatologists, paediatricians, nurses, psychologists, a child psychiatrist, a paediatric surgeon, a lactation consultant, a cardiologist, a neuropaediatrician, a social worker, physiotherapists, etc.
Whether in the intensive neonatology unit or the Koala unit, care is adapted to the baby’s behaviour. Understanding what the premature baby is saying to us requires special training for the carers. This specialised training is taught by the NIDCAP programme, for which the CHU Saint-Pierre is the first Belgian training centre to be accredited by the Brussels NIDCAP Training Centre (the only one in French-speaking Belgium).
In all our neonatal units, parents are encouraged to be with their babies 24 hours a day.
