Your baby will be admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit if he or she:
– was born on time but is sick, for example, infants with oxygen deficiency or serious infection.
– was born too early (premature), before 37 weeks of gestation. The limit of viability is at 24 weeks’ gestation.
– was born with severe congenital defects. Often these babies need surgery(s).
The service specializes in the care of sick newborns and is also known as Neonatal Intensive Care (NIC).

Child- and parent-friendly care :
Child-friendly furnishings provide plenty of light and space. We prefer to keep technical equipment at a distance and ensure that parents can be with their baby 24 hours a day. This is also good for the parent-child relationship. Facilities are also provided for parents so that they can easily stay nearby and still catch their breath. For example, we have a pumping room, a family room with kitchen and a comfortable sitting area with television.

Improvement band :
Our ward also has large, open cubicles of 12m2. These guarantee more privacy and space for the family, with maximum nursing supervision. We also have enough space for things like kangaroo care in privacy, if your baby is already stable. Kangaroo care allows the mother or father to lay her premature infant on her skin. This skin-to-skin contact is important for the infant’s development, promotes the bond between mother and child and stimulates the production of breast milk.
