Doctors

The medical staff at neonatology consists of neonatologists assisted by junior doctors.
Neonatologists are paediatricians specialising in the care of newborn children, each with their own areas of interest.
Physician specialists in training (ASO) or assistants, are doctors in the final phase of a paediatrician’s training.

Daily follow-up

An assistant will evaluate your baby’s treatment and evolution every day. He will go over his findings with one of the neonatologists. Based on your baby’s evolution, the treatment may be adjusted.

Always a doctor present

The children in our intensive care unit need care day and night. Therefore, an assistant is always present on the ward. The neonatologist on duty is permanently available and comes to the ward when needed.

Advice from other disciplines

Nurses

About 120 nurses work on the service. We try to have your baby looked after by the same nurse as much as possible. This way, the nurse gets to know your child’s habits better.
The (deputy) head nurse is responsible for the team of nurses and the organisation of care on the ward.

Physiotherapist

The physiotherapist specialises in developmental counselling. She treats children at the doctor’s request and monitors the development of very young or long-term sick children. You can contact them with questions about your child’s development.

Child psychologist and child psychiatrist

You can visit the child psychologist and child psychiatrist on the one hand to talk about the feelings and fears that this period triggers in you as a parent.
On the other hand, there is also the opportunity to reflect on your child’s typical behaviour and experiences and how you, as a parent, can respond to them.

Social worker

The admission of your baby is very drastic for you and your family. That is why you can contact the department’s social worker, both for a confidential discussion and with questions of an administrative or practical nature.

Secretaresse

Our secretaries handle administrative tasks. They process correspondence to referring paediatricians and parents. They manage the files and schedule the necessary appointments with the neonatologists.

Logistics employee

These staff are not nurses and are not aware of your baby’s condition. They are responsible for various assistance in care such as logistical support, hygiene maintenance and replenishment of equipment.

Pastor

Sometimes during certain moments – both good and not so good – it can be useful to surround your baby with a small ‘ritual gesture’. For this, you can contact a pastor associated with our service.

Cleaning team

Our team of cleaners is responsible for the daily cleaning and disinfection of the intensive care unit. The emphasis on hygiene is necessary to ensure maximum patient care.
